«Nothing in this world is certain except death and taxes,» famously stated Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, over two and a half centuries ago. Since then, little has changed in this regard. While few things in life can be taken as absolute, the renowned football media outlet COPA90 recently put a fresh spin on this timeless phrase, inspired by the highly anticipated return of Daniel Podence to Olympiacos. Their witty post read: “Death, taxes, and Daniel Podence signing for Olympiacos,” capturing the inevitability and excitement surrounding the Portuguese winger’s comeback.

Indeed, the mutual admiration between Podence and Olympiacos has never been a secret. Their initial connection now seems almost destined, as the club found in him a player who embodies passion and commitment-someone who truly “bleeds” for the jersey. For his part, Podence discovered his true home at the Piraeus-based club. Just days ago, the 29-year-old artist of the pitch inked a new contract, marking the beginning of his third distinct tenure with the Reds.

Joining an Exclusive Olympiacos Legacy

This latest return places Podence in a rarefied group within Olympiacos’ storied history-an elite “club within the club” reserved for only two legendary figures until now. Nikos Anastopoulos, the iconic “mustachioed” striker, and Grigoris Georgatos, the beloved “bald” left-back, are the only players who have donned the Olympiacos jersey in three separate spells. With Podence’s comeback, he now joins this distinguished fraternity.

Nikos Anastopoulos: The Prolific Marksman

Anastopoulos’ journey with Olympiacos began in 1980 when he transferred from Panionios. Over seven highly successful years, he established himself as a lethal striker. His 1987 move to Italy’s Avellino was groundbreaking, making him the first Greek footballer to compete in Serie A. Returning to Olympiacos in 1989, he embarked on his second stint, lasting until 1992. After a season with Ionikos, he concluded his playing career with a final season at Olympiacos in 1993-94.

Throughout a decade wearing the red and white stripes, Anastopoulos netted an impressive 197 goals in 351 appearances. He was the Greek league’s top scorer four times and helped secure seven major trophies for Olympiacos, including four league titles and three Greek Cups.

Grigoris Georgatos: The Tenacious Left-Back

Georgatos, one of Olympiacos’ finest full-backs, also had three separate spells with the club. Acquired from Panachaiki during the club’s challenging “stone years,” he quickly became a key figure in the team’s resurgence under coach Dušan Bajević. His standout performances in European competitions, especially the UEFA Champions League, attracted attention from top clubs abroad. In 1999, he joined Inter Milan, where he earned admiration for his work ethic and formed formidable partnerships with stars like Christian Vieri and Ronaldo.

Despite his success abroad, Olympiacos remained Georgatos’ true home. He returned on loan for the 2000-01 season before briefly going back to Inter. Later, after a stint with AEK Athens, he made his third and final return to Olympiacos in 2004, staying until his retirement in 2007. Across his three tenures, Georgatos amassed 273 appearances and scored 42 goals, contributing to seven league titles and three Greek Cups.

Daniel Podence: A Decade of Dedication Ahead?

Podence first arrived at Olympiacos in 2018 from Sporting Lisbon, quickly making a name for himself with his flair and determination. His impressive performances earned him a move to the English Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. However, the 2023-24 season saw him return to Greece, proving that no league compares to the comfort of “home.” After a subsequent transfer to Saudi Arabia, he left with tears and a heartfelt promise to come back.

True to his word, Podence’s dazzling second return to Olympiacos could well become a permanent chapter in his career. At 29, he has already recorded 115 appearances, 28 goals, and 27 assists for the club. His trophy cabinet includes a Greek Super League title and the 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League triumph. With ambitions to stay for a decade, Podence is poised to further cement his legacy at the beloved Piraeus club.
